DECA performance indicators explained

What DECA performance indicators are, how to read the 2026-27 lists, what PQ, CS and SP mean, and how to study them for exams and role-plays.

Performance indicators, usually shortened to PIs, are the skills DECA tests. They decide which questions can appear on your exam, and in a role-play they're printed on your sheet as the tasks the judge will score. If you understand how the lists work, you can study for both parts of your event from the same material.

What is a DECA performance indicator?

A performance indicator is one specific thing a business professional should be able to do, written as a short sentence that starts with a verb. The 2026-27 lists, compiled by MBA Research and DECA, print each one with a code and a level. Two examples from the Business Administration Core list:

  • Explain forms of financial exchange (cash, credit, debit, electronic funds transfer, etc.) (FI:058) (PQ)
  • Explain the nature of effective verbal communications (CO:147) (PQ)

The code has two parts. The letters name the instructional area (FI is Financial Analysis, CO is Communication Skills) and the number identifies the indicator within it. The tag at the end is the level.

The verb matters. "Explain" asks you to make something clear, "describe" asks for its features, "identify" asks you to name or pick out, and "demonstrate" asks you to actually do it in front of the judge. When you prepare, read the verb as the instruction.

What are the three levels on the high school lists?

The high school lists use three level tags:

Tag Level What it covers
PQ Prerequisite Employability skills: work ethic, appearance and general business behavior
CS Career sustaining The knowledge and skills needed to keep working or studying in business
SP Specialist In-depth understanding and skills across business functions

Higher levels go deeper. A PQ indicator in Financial Analysis might ask you to explain a basic form of payment, while an SP indicator in the same area expects analysis a specialist would do.

How are the performance indicator lists organized?

DECA arranges the high school indicators in three tiers:

  1. Tier 1, Business Administration Core. Shared by every career cluster. Its instructional areas are Business Law, Communication Skills, Customer Relations, Economics, Emotional Intelligence, Entrepreneurship, Financial Analysis, Human Resources Management, Information Management, Marketing, Operations, Professional Development and Strategic Management.
  2. Tier 2, the career cluster. Business Management and Administration, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Hospitality and Tourism, or Marketing. The Marketing cluster adds areas such as Channel Management, Market Planning, Marketing-Information Management, Pricing, Product/Service Management, Promotion and Selling.
  3. Tier 3, the career pathway. Narrower lists for Individual Series events. In Marketing, for example, the Merchandising pathway covers Apparel and Accessories Marketing and Retail Merchandising, and the Marketing Management pathway covers Automotive Services, Business Services, Food Marketing and Sports and Entertainment Marketing.

Principles of Business Administration events draw their role-play and exam indicators from Tier 1. Pathway indicators are used in role-plays only; exams draw on the core and cluster lists.

How do performance indicators shape your exam?

Every DECA exam is 100 multiple-choice questions, and the exam blueprint says how many come from each instructional area. For the 2026-27 Business Administration Core exam at the district level, the largest areas are Emotional Intelligence (22 questions), Financial Analysis (16), Communications (15), Operations (11), Professional Development (11) and Information Management (10).

The mix shifts as you advance. On the ICDC version of the same exam, Emotional Intelligence drops to 19 questions and Economics rises from 7 to 12. On the Marketing cluster exam, Marketing-Information Management grows from 11 questions at district to 16 at ICDC, and Promotion from 9 to 13.

That gives you a study order. Start with the areas that carry the most questions at your next competition level, and treat the one- and two-question areas as a final review.

How do performance indicators shape your role-play?

In a role-play, the indicators are listed on your participant sheet and each one becomes its own row on the evaluation form. The 2026-27 counts are four indicators in principles events, five in Individual Series and Team Decision Making, and three in Personal Financial Literacy.

Two things follow from that:

  • Every indicator needs its own moment. A judge scores each row separately, so an indicator you skip can't be rescued by a great answer on another one.
  • Explaining isn't enough on its own. The new form's higher levels reward applying the concept to the problem in front of you. A DECA Direct article on PIs puts it simply: don't just name-drop the indicator, structure your explanation to show understanding, and keep it relevant to the case.

A useful pattern for each indicator in a role-play is define, apply, connect. Say what the concept means in one sentence, apply it to the company in the scenario, then connect it to your recommendation.

For example, take the indicator "Explain the nature of effective verbal communications." A weak answer recites a definition. A stronger one says that clear spoken communication means a message tailored to the listener and checked for understanding, then applies it: "For your new cashiers, that means a 30-second greeting script and a quick check-back question, so customers hear the same message at every register."

How do you study the performance indicator lists?

  1. Download the lists for your event. You'll need the Business Administration Core list, your cluster's list and, for Individual Series events, your pathway's list. They're linked from each event page on deca.org.
  2. Sort by exam weight. Use the blueprint to rank instructional areas by how many questions they carry at your next level.
  3. Turn indicators into flashcards. Put the indicator on one side and, on the other, a one-sentence explanation in your own words plus a business example.
  4. Practice the verbs. For "explain" indicators, say your explanation out loud in under 30 seconds. For "demonstrate" indicators, practice doing the thing, such as handling a customer complaint.
  5. Mix in role-plays. Each week, run at least one practice role-play and check that you addressed every indicator on the sheet.
  6. Track misses. Keep a list of indicators you got wrong on practice tests or skipped in role-plays, and revisit them until they stick.

How does CompPrep AI use the performance indicators?

CompPrep AI's practice tests are organized by the instructional areas in DECA's blueprints, with lessons and flashcards for each area. Its DECA role-play practice takes indicators word for word from the 2026-27 lists, so your practice sheet looks like the real one, and scores each indicator as its own row. You can find the exam and the indicators that apply to your event on its page in the DECA events list. For the rest of the form, read how DECA role-plays are scored.
